Many people have problems with mosquitoes. Normally in the hotter climates, they can be a real problem. Mosquitoes usually come around where there is a ponding of water nearby. If your area has recently received a lot of rain, then chances are you will have a lot of mosquitoes hanging around. There are several mosquito pest control methods that you can easily do yourself at home. Many of these methods require little to no out of pocket expenses, but also depend on your situation.
Mosquitoes can carry many viruses, like West Nile virus, so you want to be sure that if you are working outside that you either apply a bug repellent product to your exposed skin or wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt, to avoid being bitten. If you do get bit, wash the area with warm soapy water and pat the area dry. Try to avoid scratching the bite, as it just prolongs the healing process. If you can’t stop the itching, try using a topical ointment made purposely to relive itchiness. The bite should heal within a few days. A really good mosquito pest control method is to take a dryer sheet and attach it to your belt or pin it on your clothes. The mosquitoes do not like the smell and stay away. This also works well around the picnic table. Simply attach a few sheets to the table cloth or to the umbrella.
If you have a garden and you notice mosquitoes hanging around, you can plant some marigolds in your garden or if you do not have a garden, plant some around your house or in containers outside. Mosquitoes do not like the smell and stay away. Another effective mosquito pest control method is to grow some fresh rosemary. If you are working in your yard, take some of the rosemary and rub it on your skin, the mosquitoes will stay away.
The last thing that should be done is to remove all of the standing water that you have outside in your yard. Whether it be a bird bath, a kid’s swimming pool, buckets of water, old tires, etc. They should be emptied out and the mosquitoes will soon move on and stop bothering you. If you find that you have a massive infestation of mosquitoes, you may need to hire a professional to get rid of them or you can contact your local health department. Sometimes the health department may have programs for mosquito pest control set up, where they come out and will spray the entire area from above. That would depend on many factors and they will definitely be able to answer more of your questions.
